India and China to go 4G

LTE technology is in Asia guys, soon (that will take a year or two at least) we will be playing with 4G networks  (a new set of zu-zu ads :) as a bonus).

China and India, the world's biggest mobile phone markets, are building fourth-generation (4G) networks based on the long-term evolution (LTE) technology although it will be years before it takes off as both countries are still ramping up 3G services.

Since Asia's first commercial LTE network went live in Hong Kong in November last year, there are only a handful of operators in other Asian countries such as Japan and Singapore that have launched commercial 4G networks.

Many more in the region -- including China Mobile Ltd, India's Reliance Industries Ltd and Bharti Airtel Ltd -- are building high-speed networks to cash in on growing demand for mobile data that promises to lift margins as voice services become increasingly commoditised.

China and India were late in rolling out 3G networks, but are trying to catch up with Western peers in 4G rollouts.

Operators in both markets are planning networks based on the time division duplex (TDD) variant of LTE, which differs from frequency division duplex (FDD) technology used in many networks in the United States and Europe.
So I hope, this phase pass out quickly and without any hiccups and technology barrier in rollout.

HP palm webOS: A new rising star.

HP with the acquisiton of webos has started weaving the dream of capturing a lion's share in smartphone market. HP plans to sell 100 million (though it will inclued HP's other product also) webOs devices in the first year of launch itself.

HP has launched a new webos platform known as webOS 2.0 with the host of new extended and rich features like:
with the HP now we have a new and latest entry to smartphone war and a new and exciting platform for developers to work on, with all these innovations and improvements in market the sole beneficiary is the end user.
HP's success will be based upon the factors like how it connects to its user and developer and how it creates a ecosystem so that both the user and a application developer communicate effectively (App Store).

Windows Phone 7: Success or Bound to be doomed.

Microsoft has lately tried his hands in Mobile arena with different products, there little known product KIN was a failed attempt of MS to regain the lost territory in mobile arena.
After discontinuing there efforts towards KIN and focussing more on WP 7 microsoft was able to launch it in early 2010. Unlike its failed cousin KIN, WP7 has substance to sustain in the market plus Nokia is now collborating with the MS to ship Nokia's phone with Windows OS which will eventually benefit the Microsoft in gaining the market share in smartphones arena.

On one hand Nokia is collaborating with Microsoft, while on the other a long time Microsoft's partner HP has refused to build the Windows Phone 7 due to its own acquisiton of Palm's WebOS platform.

With WebOS a powerfull but less popular OS, HP has decided to play on its own and to establish its own roots in smarthphone market. if something of this sort happens and it is bound to happen, seeing the capablities and resources HP posses, Microsoft's WP7 and Blackberry will be the first one to get a dent in its Market share.

What do you think?

LTE

LTE networks, a new standard for mobile network technology started to implemented across the globe. 3GPP is the standard body governing the LTE specifications.LTE supports atleast 100Mbits/s on a downlink and atleast 50Mbits/s on the uplink.First Carrier in the world to launch the LTE networks is TeliaSonera in the two Scandinavian cities Stockholm and Oslo and in the US MetroPCS is the first carrier to launch LTE network in Las Vegas city.Verizon is also planning to introduce this later this year, at a larger scale and will be covering the major markets in the US.

Why I am writing this? yes I have a point to make here in the context of mobile application development space, as the networks are upgraded and made to handle the rich content and as the devices are rolling out (Samsung Craft) in the market to support these networks it will open up a door to totally new world of mobile application ready to serve customer with the fat content and Real time systems.

Well I would like to mention here that India is still struggling to get its 3G networks up and running..:( come on.

So guys get ready to have fun and lets make world a better place to have fun :-)

Blackberry: isDeveloperFriendly()

I started in mobile space with the little or no knowledge of mobile application development, as it went on I worked upon the various mobile environments like Brew, palm, J2me, Win Mob, Blackberry and the latest fad is Android.

Each platform I worked upon has their own limitation and advantages and as the development goes on, advantages always outweigh the limitations posed by the platform but..but but..this was my convention and experience till the time I haven't worked upon "THE BLACKBERRIES". As a developer you are always on a high whenever you get a chance to get the hands on a new (for me) and MOST popular technology of the time, same was the case with me, I started off with a new JOSH and enthu and was quietly maintained it for my first two application, but soon I lost the charm for Blackberry and then suddenly I was trying to escape the Blackberry world.

I know you want to know the reasons behind that and I am not going to disappoint you:
  1. The IDE provided by the RIM is literally just serving as Editor with the Compilation capability. we belong to the world of IDE's like Eclipse, Net beans, Jbuilder. They get one step ahead of the developer always extending their help for fast development sessions. I can hear some voices, saying something about the Eclipse plugin well ..i must say or rather ask you guys: can you use the standalone eclipse plugin for the whole sole BB development effort? if your answer is No, read on else i must say that you have the patience :) as i cant use it for debugging, deploying etc. its not stream lined yet every now and then it complains even while compiling, though the same compiles perfectly in JDE, I guess both are the products of RIM.
  2. The Documentation: The Api doc is fairly simple, but to be frank it is simplest, no effort has been carried out to document properly (comment with the indication what its for and other helpful information) the API, Constants. Most frustrating ones are constants, they are just there for the heck of it, its up to you to take the meaning out of it. Everyone is not like me RIM :-) if you want you can visit the package net.rim.device.api.browser.field.*.
  3. The $20 for Build Signing: I dint get the logic for charging a fee for Signatures for on device testing, though its good they have reduced it from $100 to $20 but still its doesn't sound logical on the contrary Android also require a Signature for on device test but you can build your own locally and deploy the build on device after signing. When will RIM understand that they are not doing any favor on a developer rather vice versa is true, this is already proved with the huge success of iPhone (applications have fair amount of share in its success).
  4. Deploying on device: on BB deploying on device is fairly complex starting from the desktop manager to Re-deploying, if you are using OTA then manager doesn't matter. Desktop manager in simple terms is not usable for application deployment purposes if you still want to try, try it and don't complain, Secondly the major problem which I see is, if your application is using a persistent store in your application and you want to uninstall it from the device the operation wont complete unless and until you restart the device and in BB terms its a quite lengthy task to do. (this is the one which I hate most).
The above ones are the major show stopper in Blackberry development.
I am on for debate :-).
